Most of you know that change almost always comes with some form of pain. Because when circumstances change, we often lose our security as well. In the new situations, our life systems no longer work the way we are used to. This not only affects the circumstances in and with which we live, but also all the little things that we just love to capture.
Many of us prepare for the coming Easter with a fasting period. For a fixed period of time, they give up things that have become dear to them in life. On sweets, on alcohol, on meat, on television, on the internet. Others severely limit their use of digital media. For me personally, it is striking that these are mostly things that we let into us from the outside. But can Lent also be something else?
What would happen if we gave up the things that are inside us during our fasting period and often counteract our harmonious togetherness? The lie, wanting to be right, the exaggerated saving that sometimes degenerates into stinginess, the judgment of others, the arrogance, the pride with which we make ourselves better than we are, the gossip and the hypocrisy with which we whitewash things are not okay. All of these are parts that each of us has in one way or another in a more or less strong form.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could also have a Lent in these areas?
For many people, giving up sweets and the like is a challenge and it hurts. But by doing it anyway, it becomes valuable. We fast to remember the passion of Jesus up to his crucifixion, which is commemorated on Good Friday. During this time, many Christians fast for 40 days to reflect on their faith.
However, renouncing the unloved character parts in us would challenge us much more. And change us, and those around us, in ways we cannot foresee.
I encourage you to use Lent and not only give up the things that come into us from the outside, but also the things that come out of us.
Be blessed!
