Even as a youth, David was anointed king by the prophet Samuel, without the knowledge of the reigning King Saul. An inconspicuous shepherd boy who enters the service of Saul as a harpist. But already a fighter of God when he competes against the seemingly invincible blasphemer Goliath. David, for me one of the most impressive men in the Bible. Anointed king in early youth, but still without the royal dignity. Because he first had to mature to become a king. So he was on the run from Saul for many years. During this time he hired himself out as a mercenary and gathered the persecuted and dissatisfied around him. His biography contains so many different human facets.
His life experience, which he collected on the way to kingship, made him the person he was in the end. And with that in mind, we read the Psalms that he wrote.
The next few weeks will be about David and the different stations he has passed through on his way.
psalm 23
The lord is my shepherd,
I will lack nothing.
He feeds me on a green meadow
and lead me to fresh water.
He refreshes my soul.
He leads me on the right road
for his name's sake.
And though I wandered in the dark valley,
I fear no misfortune;
because you are with me
your rod and staff comfort me.
You prepare a table in front of me
in the face of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil
and pour me full.
goodness and mercy
will follow me all my life
and i will stay
in the house of the LORD forever.
