Whatever you do, be done in love. (1 Corinthians 16:14)
At first glance, this is about the commandment of charity from the Law of Moses. It is affirmed several times in the New Testament. In addition to the commandment to honor God, Jesus calls it the most important commandment. But Paul goes one step further. We should not only love our neighbors and ourselves, but everything we do should be done in love. Love should shape not only our relationships, but every activity, be it small and everyday or large and earth-shattering. In addition to our relationships with our fellow human beings, we should also treat the things around us and all of creation with care.
That sounds difficult and challenging. How can this be achieved?
Isn't it the case that we can feel whether a meal was prepared with love or without love, whether the sweater given as a gift was chosen with love. We know the difference between an industrially produced piece of furniture and a carefully crafted one-of-a-kind piece. And we can tell from the way we drive whether the bus driver is stressed.
It is relevant whether I do something in love. Loving actions have a different quality. It contributes to good cooperation. And it can help us to be recognized as disciples by our love for one another.
Heavenly Father, give me love
get up in the morning,
drink my coffee,
set me on my way,
to wait for the bus,
give a smile to the passenger,
hallow your name,
cook dinner,
to clean the kitchen,
thank you
and let your will happen.
Jesus, Son of God, leave me with love
direct my gaze to you,
recognize you in people who are close to me,
follow you,
forgive my neighbor,
praise your resurrection,
waiting for you,
watch and pray,
stand up for people in need
and not be afraid.
Holy Spirit, giver of life, grant me love at all times
for justice,
for peace,
for your kingdom
and for the preservation of creation
can stand up.
Ignite the fire of your love in me.
