Seeing has always been an important sense for me. My grandmother was severely visually impaired and finally almost completely blind. When my eyes became short-sighted in school and I had to wear stronger glasses every year, I worried that one day I would go blind too. So I practiced finding my way around the apartment in the dark. So I was very aware of what a precious gift eyesight is.

So I find it reassuring and encouraging that God sees me. He does not become short-sighted and does not grope in the dark. He sees me as a loving father who takes pity on me when I go astray and rejoices with me when I am well. As a father myself, I have always enjoyed watching my children's steps. I am thankful to God that I can still see the world around me and creation in all its colorful details through my own eyes.

For me, when God looks at me, it means being noticed and acknowledged. I am important to him. He created me and knows me through and through, both my strengths and my weaknesses. With both I'm in good hands with him.

So I take the verse of the year with me into everyday life as encouragement and a promise of God's faithfulness.
